Pinterest runs on its own version of SEO. This means keywords are king! In order to utilize the platform like the search engine it is (vs treating it like the social media platform it is not), it's imperative that you know how to find the right keywords and also know how to use them.
What are pinterest keywords?
The simplest way to think about pinterest keywords is that they are the terms people are using to search for you.
That can be one word like “photographer,” or a phrase like “destination wedding photographer.”
You want to cast a wide but specific net when it comes to the searches you show up in so that you’re not missing any possible ideal client. This means you want to cover every keyword that could be used to describe you, as everyone will make their searches a little bit different.
For this reason, building out a keyword bank for yourself is really important. That way you have a list to reference to make sure you’re covering all of your bases.
How to find keywords for pinterest
There are two main ways you can find keywords for pinterest: predictive search and the pinterest trends page.
Pinterest predictive search
Start typing a keyword or phrase into the search bar on pinterest, and check out the suggestions Pinterest gives you. These are other keywords related to what you’ve typed in that you should add to your keyword bank.
Pinterest Trends
Looking at what’s currently trending on Pinterest in your niche can definitely help you figure out more keywords to focus on. Use the filters on the left hand side to narrow down to your industry/niche and start clicking around. You’ll see keywords that aren’t just being used, but are being used the most for your niche at that moment!
If you’re willing to put a little money behind it, there’s a third way to find pinterest keywords that I definitely use for all of my clients: Pin Inspector. Since you have to pay for it, I would mostly recommend this to other Pinterest managers vs the average Joe just wanting to do keyword research for their own account since there are free ways that totally work well, but it’s totally up to you!
Where to use pinterest keywords
Short answer? Everywhere!
But blogs aren’t where I need to be short winded (not that I ever am anyway), so let’s get into the specifics.
Your profile title + bio
Your profile title, aka your name (not to be confused with your username), is searchable, so we want to make sure you’re including a keyword or two. People wouldn’t be searching for someone like me just using my name Meg, but they would be searching for “Pinterest manager,” Pinterest marketing,” and other similar keywords. So we should include that!
Your bio is the same sitch. You have a bit more room here than you do in your profile title, so it’s a great place to give some context to new visitors, as well.
Your boards
Another place where title and description should include keywords. Stay big picture in the board titles and get more descriptive in the descriptions (duh, right?). This isn’t the time to be fancy or unique - this is a searchable opportunity, so don’t waste it!
Your pin titles
We’re getting a little more obvious here, but it can’t be skipped - your pin titles need to be keyword rich! With only 100 characters, you want to get straight to the point, but fit as many relevant keywords as you can (in a way that makes sense, of course).
Your pin descriptions
Here’s where you can really go to town! Tell a story about your pin, weaving as many keywords and phrases in as you can. Don’t forget to end it with a CTA - people need to know what to do next!
Your pin graphics
Pinterest SEO is checking out your images, too. This means you have another opportunity to get more keywords in the mix, including driving home the main topic.

Keywords might feel like a lot to keep track of at first, but once you build out your keyword bank and get into the habit of weaving them into every part of your Pinterest presence, it becomes second nature. The more intentional you are about it, the more Pinterest rewards you - and the more your ideal clients find you.
